Founded in 1998 by Erik Windahl Olsen in Skien, Norway, Webhuset began as a domain name registrar and provider of simple web hosting services. Recognizing the growing demand for competitively priced hosting in Norway, which lagged behind the US market, the company initially utilized leased server capacity from American partners. Within two years, substantial growth allowed Webhuset to establish its own data center in Norway. The company expanded further, acquiring Rent a Rack AS in 2012, which added a data center in Oslo to its existing Bergen facility. Today, Webhuset operates approximately 1,300 square meters of data center space across Oslo and Bergen, housing over 6,000 servers with SSD storage. Serving over 20,000 customers, primarily in the SMB segment but also including larger public and private organizations and individuals, Webhuset positions itself as Norway's largest independent Internet Presence Provider. Key services include shared hosting (Linux and Windows), cloud servers (VPS), dedicated servers, domain registration, email hosting (including Microsoft 365), SSL certificates, and a website builder. They emphasize local infrastructure within the Norwegian internet core, offering features like full DNS control and free SSL/TLS certificates. Webhuset was acquired by GoDaddy in 2018 but underwent a management buyout led by the original founder in 2022.
