Edgio, formerly known as Limelight Networks and incorporating assets from Verizon Digital Media Services (VDMS) including Edgecast, was a prominent provider of edge-enabled solutions. Founded originally as Limelight Networks in 2001, the company focused on content delivery network (CDN) services. It acquired Edgecast (which itself was founded in 2006, acquired by Verizon in 2013, and became part of VDMS) in June 2022, rebranding to Edgio. Edgio specialized in delivering digital media content, software, and web applications quickly and securely via its global edge network, which boasted over 300 points of presence. Its integrated platform offered services across four main pillars: Delivery (CDN), Streaming (including the Uplynk platform for video workflow), Security (web application protection, DDoS mitigation), and Applications/AppOps (website orchestration). Edgio targeted businesses requiring high-performance, secure digital experiences, including media and broadcasters, e-commerce platforms, software companies, and enterprises across various sectors like finance, healthcare, and retail. Their unique selling points revolved around their extensive global network capacity, integrated platform approach, and focus on performance and security at the edge. However, Edgio filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September 2024 and ceased CDN operations on January 15, 2025. Select assets, primarily customer contracts and some patent licenses, were acquired by Akamai and Parler Cloud Technologies.
