Established in December 1989 after the separation from Magyar Posta, it was privatized starting in 1993, with Deutsche Telekom eventually becoming the majority shareholder. The company rebranded from Matáv to Magyar Telekom in May 2005. It provides a comprehensive suite of telecommunications and information communication technology (ICT) services under the 'Telekom' brand to residential, small, medium, and large corporate customers. Key offerings include fixed-line and mobile telephony, broadband internet, data transfer, digital TV (including IPTV), IT services, system integration, and networking solutions. Magyar Telekom operates extensive fixed and mobile networks, having invested significantly in infrastructure, including 4G LTE, LTE-Advanced, and 5G technologies. They were the first in Hungary to launch 4G Voice and demonstrate a live 5G network. Beyond core telecom services, Magyar Telekom offers data center services (hosting, colocation, cloud services) through facilities in Budapest, Győr, and Szeged, operating under the T-Systems brand for business solutions. The company targets a broad audience across Hungary and also holds majority ownership in Makedonski Telekom (North Macedonia) and operates in Bulgaria and Romania.
