Sonera Corporation originated from Finland's state-owned Post and Telegraph Office, established long before Finland's independence in 1917. After decades as a regulated monopoly, the telecommunications sector began deregulating in the mid-1980s. In 1994, the Post and Telegraph Agency was split, creating Telecom Finland Oy. This entity was renamed Sonera in 1998 as it expanded, particularly in the burgeoning mobile communications market, becoming Finland's largest mobile provider. Sonera was a pioneer, launching the world's first mobile internet services via WAP in 1999. In 2002, Sonera merged with Swedish telecom operator Telia AB to form TeliaSonera, the leading telecommunications group in the Nordic and Baltic regions. The Sonera brand continued to be used in Finland until March 2017, when it was rebranded to Telia as part of TeliaSonera's renaming to Telia Company in 2016. Today, Sonera's operations are fully integrated into Telia Finland Oyj, which offers a wide range of telecommunications services, including mobile, broadband, TV, IT services for businesses, and web hosting solutions like shared hosting (Kotisivupalvelu), domain registration, and DNS services, primarily targeting the Finnish market.
