Shape Security, founded in 2011 and headquartered originally in Mountain View, California, is a cybersecurity company specializing in bot mitigation, fraud prevention, and application security. They developed advanced technologies using AI, machine learning, and large-scale telemetry analysis to protect web and mobile applications, as well as APIs, from sophisticated automated attacks like credential stuffing, fake account creation, web scraping, and other forms of fraud and abuse. Shape's solutions were designed to distinguish between legitimate human users and malicious bots without impacting the user experience, often deployed via a reverse proxy or API integration. Their primary target audience included large enterprises, particularly in sectors like banking (protecting over half of North America's online banking), airlines, retail, and government agencies. A key differentiator was their managed service approach, backed by a human Security Operations Center (SOC), and their ability to detect attacker retooling. In December 2019, F5 Networks announced its acquisition of Shape Security for approximately $1 billion, a deal finalized in January 2020. This acquisition integrated Shape's anti-fraud capabilities into F5's broader portfolio of application delivery and security services, aiming to provide comprehensive end-to-end protection from 'code to customer'. Shape's technology now forms a core part of F5's security offerings, enhancing defenses against automated threats.
