About Scaleway

Information written by company

Scaleway, formerly known as Online SAS or Online.net, is a French cloud computing and web hosting company founded by Xavier Niel in 1999. It is a subsidiary of the Iliad group. Initially established as a web hosting and domain registration provider, the company expanded its services over the years. In 2006, it launched dedicated server rentals under the Dedibox brand. Following Iliad's acquisition of Alice ADSL in 2008, Online SAS took over datacenter operations, eventually consolidating hosting activities after merging with Dedibox in 2010. A significant milestone was the launch of labs.online.net in 2013, an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) platform using ARM-based bare metal servers, which was rebranded as Scaleway in 2015. Scaleway targets developers and businesses, offering a comprehensive cloud ecosystem including bare metal servers (Dedibox), cloud instances (Elements), containerization, serverless architectures, object storage, managed databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis), domain registration (BookMyName), and colocation services. Its infrastructure comprises multiple data centers primarily located in Paris, France, with additional regions in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Warsaw, Poland, emphasizing renewable energy and low PUE. Unique selling points include being a major European cloud alternative, offering ARM and x86_64 bare metal cloud options, Apple silicon M1 as-a-Service, and a commitment to sustainable practices.
