Level 3 Communications was a major American telecommunications and internet service provider headquartered in Broomfield, Colorado. Founded in 1985 as Kiewit Diversified Group, a construction subsidiary, it was spun off in 1998 to focus on telecommunications. Level 3 built a significant global communications network, providing data, voice, video, and security services. Its core offerings included one of the world's largest internet backbones, content delivery network (CDN) services, data center and colocation facilities, and IP-based voice services. Level 3 primarily targeted large enterprises, government agencies, and wholesale customers (other carriers and service providers) requiring robust and scalable network infrastructure. In 2017, Level 3 Communications was acquired by CenturyLink in a major merger. The combined company operated under the CenturyLink name until September 2020, when it rebranded to Lumen Technologies. Lumen continues to leverage the extensive network infrastructure built by both Level 3 and CenturyLink, focusing on emerging technologies like edge computing, hybrid cloud connectivity, and advanced security solutions, while still providing core network, voice, and CDN services to its enterprise customer base. The Level 3 brand itself is no longer actively used, but its infrastructure forms a critical part of the current Lumen network.
