GratisDNS was a prominent Danish internet service provider founded in 2001 by Peter Larsen. Initially gaining popularity for its free DNS service, it became a significant player in the Danish market, managing DNS for a substantial percentage of .dk domains. The company, operating under Larsen Data ApS, expanded its offerings to include domain registration (as an ICANN accredited registrar), shared web hosting, email hosting, and SSL certificates. They aimed to provide reliable and user-friendly services, primarily targeting Danish individuals and businesses. In July 2020, GratisDNS was acquired by One.com, part of the larger European digital services group, team.blue (previously group.ONE). This acquisition positioned the combined entity as the leading provider of .dk domains. Following the acquisition, GratisDNS operated independently for a period, but in March/April 2022, all GratisDNS customers and services were fully migrated to the One.com platform. The GratisDNS brand was subsequently phased out, and its systems were shut down by June 30, 2022. While originally known for its free DNS, its services evolved to include standard shared hosting features like cPanel, Installatron, and free SSL certificates, though it lacked advanced options like VPS or dedicated servers.
