COMSATS Internet Services (CIS), established in 1996 by the Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS), is recognized as the pioneer Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Pakistan. Initially created to offer internet connectivity primarily to government organizations and support social services like tele-health and distance learning, CIS began with dial-up operations in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi. It quickly expanded its reach to other major cities including Peshawar, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Multan, and Sukkur. In 1998, CIS launched its data center services, offering hosting and co-location. It became Cisco's first training partner in Pakistan in 2000 and introduced DSL services in 2004. Its flagship wireless broadband service, Tornado®, was launched in 2005. CIS operates well-equipped data centers in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, and Faisalabad, providing services like Virtual Private Servers (VPS), domain registration, web hosting (Linux and Windows), and server colocation under the brand name Hawaii™. They also offer optical fiber connectivity (COMSpeed™), software development (Prism®), video conferencing (Viacon™), and IT training. CIS targets a diverse audience, including government bodies, over 10,000 corporate clients (national and international firms, NGOs, universities), and residential users. Unique selling points include its pioneering status, extensive network across Pakistan, diversified service portfolio, social initiatives like Comclinic™ telehealth, and infrastructure enhancements like L-Root server deployment with ICANN and RIPE Atlas Anchor hosting.
